Statement of Intent

For my coursework I am using the song ‘Gatekeeper’, by Jessie Reyez in order to produce a music video that is relevant to the theme of protest by opposing the exploitation of women in the entertainment industry. This would appeal to the demographic of mainstream 16-25 year olds, especially those who have a desire to peruse a career in acting or music, as it creates awareness for the dark side to the more ‘luxurious’ industry that media presents as being so awe-inspiring. It therefore may also appeal to those in the feminist movement, as it breaks the perfect image that men portray in order to conceal their true actions and intentions. Whilst some may not be a part of this movement, the majority of this demographic will have knowledge and desire to change the inappropriate conduct of men in order to exploit women to their own advantage due to the high emphasis of such issue in young modern culture.    There would be a more niche representation of social groups throughout the mu...

Perfect Audience Member

Brief: Social Conscious, 16-25, middle-upmarket demographic. Mainstream Girls: The video would attract to those who may have aspirations of pursuing a career in the performance industry, or similar ones where good looks & talent lead to success, who therefore need to be informed on the dangers that can occur i.e exploitation, manipulation & sexual harassment. Description: Clothes: The audience would therefore dress very ‘mainstream’, e.g designer/high street brands & makeup, or a high end  ‘Towie’ themed style - similar to what they believe they need to dress like for that career option. Taking the latter style, they would wear skimpy, tight outfits e.g bodycon dresses & heels with an excessive amount of makeup. Diet: Would probably eat normal mainstream food i.e fast food, or eat out. Some however might eat healthy foods, such as salad, in order to maintain the ‘perfect desired’ body shape. Lifestyle: not very promiscuous as they are unaware of the dangers...

Permission Letter

Dear Sir/Madam I would like to ask for your permission to use Jessie Reyez’s ‘Gatekeeper’from 2017 to use in my A-level media coursework. For this we are required to make a music video to a song, under the category of ‘protest’, which will be contributed towards my final grade at the end of Year 13. I would like to clarify that the use of the song would be entirely private, in no case would my coursework be released publicly. I chose ‘Gatekeeper’ to fit the brief as I feel that the message of women’s exploitation in the music industry is not exposed enough, and therefore I would like to promote the topic with my coursework. Once again, I would like to ask your permission to use this song in my A-level coursework. I hope to hear from you soon, Yours faithfully, Elena Grant (Year 12, Weald of Grammar School)

Analysis of videos similar to the one I want to create

The One That Got Away - Katy Perry  For my video I want the featured character to be dwelling on her old traumatised memories of her past experiences & to keep flitting back to the past and the present. In Perry’s video she, as an old woman, is a remembering her young years with an ex lover. You can distinguish between to two, the past more light & the present more monotone & dark. I’d like to apply this to my own video, with the memories being more colourful as she remembers the negatively disguised experiences which she perceived as happy, bout gradually get less saturated as she began to realise the darker side.  In Katy Perry’s music video she ties in links from her memories and present with details that have left a physical mark on her, in this case a tattoo. I’d like to apply this concept to my video but with other physical details e.g. scars, bruises, cigarette burns, as well as tattoos. These would link with the memories of being out and bein...

Chosen song

Gatekeeper - Jessie Reyez I have chosen this song because it protests against the exploitation for women in the performing industry. I think it is an important song to do because it can make young girls aware of the dangers of the industry and how its isn’t their fault. It also has in it, the determination that every girl experiences for an aspiration in her future. It is important that this subject is bought up beach use it continues to be ignored due to it being a male dominated place and therefore is swept under the rug. However, if bought up will alter those to stand up for what is right and to not be passive & submissive. Now, girls body images and appearance is everything and dressing up provocatively is seen as on the way to success. But it is important to protest against these stereos as more women need to be empowered to be themselves and to not be controlled by men who use them for fame & sex. I chose the artist Jessie Reyez as she regualy sings about issues that ...

Woman Like Me - Little Mix Women’s gender roles & stereotypes. Narrative of the video: girls being sent away to a house in order to be taught how to behave like a ‘proper’ women  The first shot is a  performative close up of Jesy lip syncing along to the song, dressed in all black in a prisoner container van. She is central in the foreground, with Jade to the left in the background, making her the main focus.  “I always say what I’m feeling’ protests against the typical stereotype that a woman should keep their thoughts to themselves.  The second shot cuts a mid close up shot of the girls, with Jesy still lip syncing but this time in the foreground on the right with the other girls in the left/center background. They are wearing simplistic black unitards, to signify that they are  prisoners, but with their legs on show which contrasts with a the view that women should not wear provocative clothing. “I was born without a zip on my mouth’  ad...

Textual analysis ‘Gatekeeper’ Jessie Reyez

GATEKEEPER - JESSIE REYEZ  STARTS WITH SPEECH FROM THE ARTIST ON WHAT GIRLS WANT TO BE WHEN THEY GROW UP & WHAT SHE WANTED TO BE AKA A SINGER.  CLOSE UP, MAKES IT PERSONAL & INCLUSIVE FOLLOWED UP BY CHILDHOOD VHS VIDEOS OF HERSELF WITH A TOY MICROPHONE. HIGHLIGHTS THE INNOCENCE SHE ASSOCIATED WITH THE CAREER AND HOW IT IS OF MASSIVE IMPORTANCE TO HER. THE SHOWCASE OF HER AS CHILD ALSO SHOWS THE VULNERABILITY & NAIVETY OF THE FUTURE EVENTS, MAKING IT MORE EMOTIONAL FOR THE AUDIENCE.  THE LYRICS FROM THE CHORUS    ‘GIRLS TIE YOUR HAIRUP IF YOU WANNA BE A STAR’ REFERENCES HOW IN ORDER FOR WOMEN TO SUCCED AND WORK THEIR WAY UP IN THE INDUSTRY, THEY ARE FORCED TO PERFORM SEXUAL ACTS FOR THOSE OF IMPORTANCE IN ORDER TO DO SO. THIS IS ALSO DEMONSTRATED IN THE LINE ‘HOW MUCH WOULD IT TAKE YOU TO SPREAD THOSE LEGS APART’, EMPHASISING THE RISK    & SACRIFICES WOMEN WOULD TAKE IN ORDER TO REACH THEIR DREAM. THE FACT THAT THE LITTLE GI...
